Settling your Live in Nanny in or the Dos and Donts of employing a Live In Nanny

If it is the first time you have employed a live in Nanny, you may welcome some advice on how to ensure your nanny enjoys a long and happy employment with your family. A livein Nanny should very quickly be made to feel a part of the family and, even if English is her first language, she will need time & understanding while she adapts to her new environment & becomes familiar with her duties. From day one, it is absolutely crucial to make the time to have regular discussions with your Nanny. We recommend a time slot each week with a more indepth monthly talk if required to discuss any problems or serious concerns. Her are a few basic rules which will help your Nanny feel valued and comfortable in your household.

Rule 1: Dont expect your Nanny to be a mind reader. She doesnt know how you like things done around your home. Take the time to show her and plan for at least one parent to be at home for the first three days to allow a settling in period. Make sure she knows where to find everything she will need and how to lock up, set the alarm etc

Rule 2: Take the time to show her the way you like things to be done with the children. Explain to her how you feed, bath and discipline your children, how much homework they should do and when, how much TV they should watch, if they are allowed snacks between meals etc

Rule 3: Do not assume that, because your Nanny has been through a nanny training course, she will do things your way. Be very explicit with the childcare instructions you give her and explain your thoughts about limits, discipline and punishments.

Rule 4: Draw up a schedule of daily duties. Write down everything you want her to know about the family routine including location and timings of the childrens activities, your work schedule, babysitting requirements etc If there are changes to the weekly schedule then give advance warning and write them down. Communicate clearly and everything will run smoothly.

Rule 5: Remember that your Nanny or Mothers Help is not your housekeeper and that the children should always come first.

Rule 6: Allow your livein Nanny her free time. During her time off or when her duties are finished she should not feel that she has to leave the house in order to relax. You must make it possible for her to stay in her room or the common areas of the house without her feeling that she should be interacting with the children.

Rule 7: During the settling in period your childrens mood and behaviour may fluctuate as they learn to trust and bond with the new Nanny. However show confidence in your new helper and your children, being perceptive, will soon follow your lead. Help your Nanny to understand your children by telling her about each childs likes and dislikes.

Rule 8: Provide written instructions on what to do in an emergency.

We hope that, with the help of these simple guidelines, you will have a long and successful relationship with your Nanny. However if you feel we can be of service to you, both before and during the placement, please contact us for advice and support. One of our trained staff will be happy to answer your questions.
